For this project we designed a residential building adjacent to the NJPAC Theater in Newark. The site was intended to also house a community center for the performing arts to support the idea of an “Art Community” in this city block.

 My design approach focuses on using Mass Timber to design interesting residential units for possible performing artists or students studying the arts in the area. To create a dynamic residential space I lofted the beds and designed the units using a pseudo-a frame design. This design became the structural system for the entire building.

The challenges of this project were beginning to design based on several code requirements, specifically site, zoning, egress and construction were emphasized this semester.
